    12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

As educators, and allied professionals working with school-age children, ensuring the physical and emotional safety of those entrusted to our care has always been our top priority.

The Columbine school shooting in April 1999 forced us to take a closer look at what we do to keep students physically safe. In October of last year, the rise of the #MeToo movement and the #MeTooK12 offshoot from it, as well as the public revelation of rampant sexual abuse in the Catholic church, caused a long-overdue assessment of other forms of threats to students’ safety.

This panel will bring together experienced professionals who work in school settings to share their thoughts about how we can address these important issues most effectively.  It will include multiple perspectives on these issues; a division Head of an independent school, school psychologists, and a sports psychologist since concerns often surface in the context of school’s athletic programs. Through the panelists’ presentations, and the discussion that is stimulated we will all leave with a deeper understanding of the problem, and with a greater awareness of tools available to us to help our students develop the skills needed to maintain secure personal boundaries, in school and elsewhere in their lives.
